ABOUT THE GAME:
The idea is to 'PUSH' for points. Each time you push, you have a chance
of scoring points, or being TERMINATED! If you are terminated, you
receive 0 points for that turn. Each time you push, the range for which
you receive points increases, BUT SO DOES YOUR CHANCE OF BEING TERMINATED!
You get ONE terminator token each day. When you are terminated, you can
choose to use your terminator token, and receive the point value you
accumulated before being terminated. With only ONE per day, use it wisely!
How far will you PUSH YOUR LUCK? Will you stop in time, or will you
push your luck too far? Time will tell...
LEGAL STUFF:
This door game may be freely distributed as long the original file
(in its ZIP form) is distributed and not tampered with in any way.
To the best of our knowledge, this door game can not in any way cause
any harm to your system. The game has been tested on several different
configurations, and has not caused any problems. We, the authors,
and the authors of the tools we used to write this game, will not
be responsible for any consequences of you running this game.
NOTE about installation:
We will assume that you know how to set up a door on your specific
BBS software, and will not go into detail on that. This documentation
is to tell you how to set up Push Your Luck if you know how to set up
a door with your BBS. As we are not familiar with all BBS types, we
will add more instructions to this documenatation as the need arises,
and as people bring things to our attention concerning specific BBS
types and operating systems.
IF UPGRADING:
Unzip to your Push Your Luck directory. Nothing will be overwritten
that shouldn't. If registered, check the new reg.cfg file, and make sure
you have all the options set the way you want them in your register.cfg.
If you are currently using the door.cfg file, simply change your door.bat
to use the -c switch, such as: push -c door.cfg. A better way is simply
to pass the drop file path and name, and you can in most cases delete
door.cfg and not use it at all. Example: push -d c:\bbs\dorinfo1.def.
You can run PUSH -HELP and see all the new options available, although I
recommend only using the options if you experience problems. If you have
a local.bat and local.cfg from a previous version, delete them. They
won't work with this new version, as to test local now, just type PUSH -L.
Also, if you have a dorinfo1.def in your push directory from a previous
version, it can be deleted now also, as it was for local mode.
PUSH YOUR LUCK installation procedures for a NEW INSTALL:
1. Copy all the files into a directory of their own.
2. Rename sample.bat to door.bat. Modify it to suit your system.
Make sure the directories are correct. The -d switch you see
in there is for your complete path and filename of your drop file.
3. There is a sample.cfg file included. This file is usually not
needed, but is there if you have a non-standard setup. If you
experience any problems after following these instructions, you
can run PUSH -HELP to see many options you can manually set.
ONLY worry about these options if you experience problems.
If you need to set MANY options due to a non-standard setup,
then you can rename the sample.cfg to door.cfg, and set the options
in there. Then in your door.bat, use PUSH -c door.cfg.
NOTE ABOUT MULTINODE:
THIS GAME IS TRUE MULTINODE, WITH FILE LOCKING. Setup is the same,
except instead of just door.bat, you will have door1.bat, door2.bat,
etc. You can also have door1.cfg, door2.cfg, etc.
That's about it. Push Your Luck was written with Borland Turbo C++
ver 3.0 and Opendoors Door Programming Toolkit ver 6.0. (by Brian Pirie)
SYSOP FUNCTION KEYS:
This door has some built-in Sysop keys, as a result of using Opendoors.
Some of particular interest are:
[UP]/[DOWN]: Use the arrow keys to increase or decrease the amount of
time which the user has left in the door.
Alt-C: Sysop Chat - Press the Escape Key to exit
Alt-J: Sysop Jump to Dos - Type exit when done
This will work if enough memory is available
Alt-D: Drop to Dos and send the user back to the BBS
Alt-H: Hang up on User
Alt-K: The "User Keyboard-Off" key allows the sysop to temporarily
prevent the user from typing anything on their keyboard.
This has no effect on the local keyboard, but causes the
door to ignore any keystrokes from remote. Press Alt-K
again to re-enable the user's keyboard.
MAINTENANCE:
This door game requires no maintenance on the Sysop's part whatsoever.
After midnight, users will automatically be allowed to play again.
The first user to play each month will trigger monthly maintenance to run
automatically, saving last month's winner, and resetting the user and
score files.
TESTING THE DOOR IN LOCAL MODE:
If you want to test the door in local mode before setting it up on your
BBS, just type PUSH -L. Then, to reset the game before installing,
just delete *.dat and *.dte. DON'T DELETE THESE IF THIS IS AN UPGRADE!
